Moona schrijft:
According to the data, in Bhaktapur brick kilns, altogether 1550 children work and in Kathmandu brick kilns altogether 740 children work. According to a participatory evidence- based action research conducted by child protection center and the institute of human rights communication, 49 brick kilns from the 64 have employed children as child labor. 15 brick kilns are declared as child labor free zone.
Wat zijn de redenen waarom kinderen in steenfabrieken werken? Moona schrijft:
The common answer is poverty but it is not only the reason. Push factors are:
Lack of access in education
Tendency of school dropout
Neglect/ family quarrel
Unemployment and poverty of parents
Social discrimination
Inequality of opportunities in city and village
Pull factors are:
Cheap labor
The belief of owners that children may not go for strike and raise their voice
Irresponsibility and lack of effectiveness of concerned monitoring bodies of government
Hoe komen kinderen terecht in de steenfabrieken? Moona schrijft:
The children are generally hired through the naikes (the mediator). The naikes work is to make sure the availability of worker and lead them while working in the kiln. Also brick kiln owners contact laborers, who work in the kiln on daily basis (coal crushing, wood cutting and wall maintaining). The children who accompany their parents can work there also. But we can also find some child care center established by brick kiln owners. Some children are found with their parents seasonally working at brick kilns, where wages are paid not on daily basis but on the pieces.
Wat zijn de risico’s voor de kinderen? Moona schrijft:
According to the data provided by metropolitan police range Bhaktapur, 12 children drowned in the pits dug at brick kilns in last two decades.
Wat zijn de mogelijkheden om deze kinderarbeid te voorkomen? Moona schrijft:
The presence of children in brick factories with ability to support parents staying without work is almost impossible. Families often have a share of children sweat and toil. Not all the children but many children who are not enrolled in education, work at the brick kiln in the name of helping hand. The child engaged in work hoping to earn more money by making more bricks as the amount will be given as per piece of brick. The main cause of children working is due to poverty. Hence, it is very difficult to eradicate totally the child working at brick kilns or any other places.
But it is possible. Better slow than never.
